Happy Birthday to BoXPol - one of the key instruments for JOYCE-CF
In July 2018 the polarimetric X-band radar BoXPol could celebrate its’ 10th anniversary as one of the key instruments for JOYCE-CF. “Happy birthday to you, BoXPol!”.
At the 16 July 2018 the radar and remote sensing research group at the former Meteorological Institute at the University of Bonn could celebrate 10 years of polarimetric volume observation in the area around Bonn in best weather conditions.
To celebrate the anniversary of the unprotected parabolic dish antenna we toasted with cold drinks at a fantastic sunset at the skyline of Bonn and brought the day to a close in a breath taking lightshow. Luckily the weather has been on our side in two ways. At first we could enjoy the evening at warm temperatures and blue sky, but second, as we had to switch off the power of the radar for health reasons, we did not lose any precipitation data, as it did not rain anywhere in the radar catchment for that evening. The lightshow delighted Bonn during summer 2018 and was visible from many spots in the city of Bonn or the surrounding terrain.
